The Tri-State Hiking Club will meet for a 3.5 mile urban hike through Covington and Newport. They meet Sunday at 10:00AM at the old Bavarian Brewery Building (formerly Jillian’s). Check out their itinerary:

Lewisburg is located in West Covington, Ky. It was an idyllic German-American neighborhood built in the early 1900’s and almost destroyed by I-75 construction in the 1950s. We will start our urban hike from the old Jillian’s parking lot which is located underneath the I-75 overpass at the intersection of 12th street and Bullock street in West Covington.  If coming by I-75 north or south, take the 12th street exit and there you are. We will then either climb and descend the steepest street in Covington, West 12th street off of Dixie Highway.  This will be the only cardio workout along this mostly flat, hard surfaced and paved route. From there, it is Eastward along the newly widened, 4-lane, 12th street and across the bridge into Newport for a few blocks.  Then Westward back into Covington and eventually back to our starting point. We will pass and perhaps briefly stop at several historic locations (ST. John’s Church, Bavarian Brewery, Linden Cemetery, C&O Roundhouse, the Covington Basilica/Cathedral, the old Green Line street car barns, the Newport Steel Rolling Mills (site of severe labor riots in the 1920s), the Carnegie  Library, etc). Lots to see and a photographer’s smorgasbord.  Total mileage, about 3 and a half miles.  Allow 2 hours at a moderate pace with some stops at points of interest along the way. This is not a brisk or cardio walk but you’ll warm up during the walk.
