The Florence Y’alls completed a series sweep of the Empire State Greys in dramatic fashion on Thursday.
Florence entered the bottom of the ninth trailing the struggling Greys (3-60) by a score of 7-6, when Y’alls first baseman Brennan Price hit his 14th homerun of the season to tie the game.
Right fielder Anthony Brocato followed with his 18th homer of the year to claim an 8-7 win for the Y’alls (27-35).
Florence has now won five straight games.
“Brennan Price is swinging the hottest bat in the league right now,” Brocato said. “He had a huge swing to tie it up. It takes a lot of pressure off me. (Greys reliever Jesus Rosario) kind of attacked me with a lot of fastballs throwing me up a bit. I tried to just catch the barrel on the last one. It happened to go out.”
Florence relief pitcher Evy Ruibal (2-0) claimed the win.
“We like to put zeros on the scoreboard in the innings after we score,” said Brian White, Florence manager. “It’s not easy to do.”
Florence catcher Justin Gomez had the task of adjusting to multiple Florence pitchers.
“I think its just (about) sticking to the game plan that we had going previous to going into (Thursday),” Gomez said. “I think the pitchers did a good job understanding when to go in on guys, when to go away on guys, when to mix up pitches, keep guys off-balance. I think (Ruibal) put the nail in the coffin for them.”
Florence opens a three-game home series against Sussex County (New Jersey) on Friday. Game time is 7:03 p.m.
