The LINK nky Team of the Week for Sep. 8-Sept. 14 presented by Ortho Cincy is the Ryle volleyball team.
The Lady Raiders secured nearly 4,300 votes, representing just over half of the total vote count. Calvary Christian boys soccer also had a strong showing with 2,919 votes.
A bonus for the Ryle volleyball team is that they are now eligible for Team of the Season (TOS) for the fall. There will also be a winter and spring winner. Each TOS winner will receive a $500 scholarship that will go to an athlete of their choice and they will then be considered for Team of the Year (TOY)
For the team that is awarded TOY, online and print articles will again be published, a large commemorative plaque will be presented and the school will receive an additional $500 scholarship to be presented to the athlete of their choice at the end of the school year. The call for nominations, voting and winning announcement for each will follow the same format as the TOTW.
RYLE VOLLEYBALL
Ryle shocked the state by doing something no other public school has since at least 2002 and that is beat Assumption out of Louisville on Sept. 14.
They are the first public school to pull off the feat since the KHSAA website tracked games on the website, defeating Assumption, 2-0 (26-24, 25-21) in bracket play of the Louisville Invitational Volleyball Tournament, where the Raiders went 3-2 and made it to the semifinals.
Following the tournament, they grabbed a 3-0 (25-9, 25-14, 25-12) victory over Dixie Heights to improve to 12-2 on the season. Ryle has only lost seven sets out of 40 played this season.
Through their 14 games, Lucy Trapp (119) and Karsyn Griffin (102) are leading the team in kills. Leading in assists is Morgan Heater, who sits inside the top 15 in the state with 340. Ariana Furuta has a team best 203 digs.
The Lady Raiders look to add on to their success with a Friday night doubleheader at Tates Creek against Ballard and Russell.
