Weather delays couldn’t stop Covington Catholic’s track and field team on Saturday.
The Colonels doubled up the field at Bishop Brossart’s Mustang Athletic Complex, winning 11 of 18 events and scoring 222 points. Runner-up Bourbon County tallied 109 points. It’s their third straight region title as they also look for a third straight state title on Friday’s KHSAA Class 2A state track and field meet in Lexington.
Individual region champs were Jacob Keller in the 110-meter hurdles, Dominic Terzo in the 300-meter hurdles, Rhett Blettner in the 400, Joe Mayer in the 3,200, Quentin Jones in the discus, Will Danneman in the long jump and Landon Dailey in the high jump.
All four relay teams won their events in the 4Ă—100, 4Ă—200, 4Ă—400 and 4Ă—800.
CovCath earned points in all 18 events and finished 1-2 in three events. Keller and Jack Fender took 1-2 in the 110-meter hurdles, Danneman and Zach Brooks placed 1-2 in the long jump and Jones and Caleb Wiest went 1-2 in the discus.
Other top three finishers were Garrett Gallagher second in the 200, Jack Salyers second in the 800, Braden Franxman third in the 3,200, Danneman third in the high jump, Henry Wahoff and Landon Dailey second and third in the triple jump, Paul Klosinski and Dailey second and third in the pole vault and Matthew Woolf and Quentin Jones second and third in the shot put.
Holmes’ Byron Rayfield won the adaptive long jump. Holmes’ Demetrius Holloway finished second in the 300-meter hurdles, Lloyd Memorial’s 4×400 relay team was runner-up and Juggernauts’ AJ Curry was runner-up in the high jump. Top two finishers automatically qualified for the state meet while the next 10 best times or distances from around the state got an at-large bid to compete at state.
Holmes’ girls won the adaptive 4×100 shuttle hurdle relay and the 2×200 relay to punch their tickets to the state meet.
