The Covington Catholic and Lloyd Memorial boys’ track and field teams had solid days on Wednesday at the Class 2A, Region 4 track and field meet at Bourbon County.
The Colonels won yet another region title while the Juggernauts came in third. Covington Catholic recorded 177 points in the meet Bourbon County in second with 113, Lloyd scoring 70, edging out Lexington Catholic by two points. Holmes finished eighth with six points.
Covington Catholic got winners in seven events, Will Sheets and Quentin Jones won multiple events while Lloyd’s Josiah Lockridge was also a multi-event winner.
Sheets won the 800 meters (1:56.28) and the 3,200 meters (9:40.07). Jones won the shot put (47-2.75) and the discus (137-1). Other Colonel winners were Jackson Schmid in the 400 (51.56), Joe Mayer in the 1,600 (4:30.59) and Paul Klosinski in the pole vault (14-7).
Lockridge stood out in the sprints, winning the 100 (10.88) and 200-meter dash (22.35). He recently signed with Northern Kentucky University for track and field and heads into the Class 2A state track and field meet on top of the performance list for the 100 and 200.
Lloyd’s AJ Curry won the high jump (6-0) and the Juggernauts were also strong in the relay events, winning the 4×100 (44.38) and 4×200 (1:31.89).
Runner-up finishes in Wednesday’s meet include Covington Catholic’s Garrett Gallagher in the 200 (22.97), Mayer in the 3,200 (9:41.44), Jonathan Grooms in the long jump (19-5), the Colonels 4×100 relay team (44.52) and CovCath’s 4×400 team (3:31.89).
In the girls’ meet, Holmes and Lloyd Memorial tied for sixth with 21 points.
Holmes’ Daryhia Cole was the top finisher for local teams with a second place finish in the shot put with a throw of 29-feet, one-inch. Cole also placed fourth in the discus (70-7).
Lloyd’s girls 4×100 (55.13) and 4×200 (1:55.53) relay teams finished fourth as their top finishes. Holmes’ girls 4×100 (52.82) relay team placed third.
Holmes’ Bryon Rayfield won the adaptive long jump (23-11.25), and the Holmes adaptive relay teams won the 2×50, 2×200 and 4×100.
The Class 2A state track and field meet is May 30 at the University of Kentucky’s Outdoor Track Facility.
