Thursday NKY HS roundup: Simon Kenton baseball wins shootout at Highlands

The Simon Kenton Pioneers (19-8) ventured to Fort Thomas and won a 16-14 shootout against the Highlands Bluebirds (16-11).

Simon Kenton collected 11 hits and took advantage of nine walks. Junior Daniel Uhl went 3-for-5 with a triple, two runs batted in and scored four runs. Senior Dakota Brown went 2- for-3 with a home run, four RBI and scored twice. Senior right fielder Ian Powell doubled and drove in two with junior infielder Evan Sheridan scoring three times and junior Bailey Rump scoring twice.

Brown started the game pitching an inning. Junior Nick Veid (2-1) took over the next inning and pitched into the sixth inning striking out three and walking two. Uhl finished the game striking out two and walking one for his first save this year.

Highlands also tallied 11 hits and also stayed patient at the plate drawing seven walks. The Bluebirds scored five unearned runs off four Pioneer errors. Senior Jack Hendrix went 2-for-4 with a home run, one RBI and scored three runs. Junior third baseman Drew Barth went 2-for-5 with a double, one RBI and scored twice.

The Bluebirds had five extra-base hits. Junior first baseman Luke Schneider homered and scored twice with junior right fielder Zach DeSylva homering and driving in two. Senior catcher Brennan Kelsay doubled and drove in two. Senior infielder Ryan DeBurger drove in two and senior designated hitter JP Donelan scored twice.

Junior Brody Benke (3-3) started and pitched into the fourth inning striking out three and walking five. Junior Cam Bottom took over and pitched through the sixth inning before Hendrix finished it striking out one.

Simon Kenton plays host to Walton-Verona (21-5) at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

The Jaguars (15-8) hit the road and knocked off the defending 8th Region champion Colonels (16-13) in non-region action in eight innings.

Sophomore first baseman Grace Cline started the top of the eighth on second base and junior shortstop Ava Scott grounded out to second moving her to third. Cline then scored the game-winning run when senior pitcher Kendall Blau hit a sacrifice fly to center.

The Colonels moved the game-tying run to second in the bottom of the eighth with one out. But Blau struck out the next Colonels to end the game. Blau (11-6) pitched a complete game striking out six, walking none and allowing 10 hits and just three earned runs as Cooper committed two errors.

Oldham County had four errors. Cooper scored two unearned runs off those errors.

Cooper batted .333 (12 for 36) overall. Senior second baseman Emily Schmeltz went 3 for 4 scoring once and Blau went 3 for 5 with one RBI. Senior third baseman Ashley Chaney went 3 for 4 with two RBI and scored twice with junior right fielder Kailey Milburn going 2 for 4 with a double, two RBI and scored once.

Cooper plays host to Dixie Heights (14-11) on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in a 9th Region battle.
