The Beechwood Tigers (18-4) and Walton-Verona Bearcats (18-4) baseball teams advanced to the All “A” State semifinals with quarterfinal victories at Campbellsville High School.
Beechwood downed the Hazard Bulldogs (15-10-1), 7-4. The Tigers scored trailed 4-3 entering the top of the sixth before scoring three runs to go up 6-4 and added one more in the top of the seventh.
Senior Matt Kappes (6-0) pitched a complete game to earn the win for Beechwood striking out five, walking one and allowing nine hits and four earned runs. The Tigers committed no errors behind him.
Beechwood batted .357 (10-for-28) overall. The Tigers saw junior third baseman Michael Detzel go 2-for-3 with two doubles and one run scored. Eighth grade outfielder Tyler Fryman went 2-for-2 with a double and scored three runs. Sophomore catcher Carson Welch went 2-for-2 with one RBI and senior right fielder Cameron Boyd homered driving in three and scoring once to go with two walks.
Walton-Verona took care of the host Eagles (16-8), 11-1 in five innings. Junior Mason Howard pitched a complete game striking out five to go with six hits, no walks and one earned run. The Bearcats made no errors behind him.
The Bearcats batted .375 (9-for-24) overall. Senior first baseman Lance Coleman went 2- for-3 with a home run, one RBI and scored twice. Senior shortstop Evan Kerns went 2-for-3 with one RBI and scored twice. Senior second baseman Ed Drohan went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Senior catcher Ethan Hager tripled and batted in three with junior right fielder Cayden Smithers doubling and scoring twice.
The two play again Sunday in the semifinals. Beechwood faces Lexington Sayre (20-6) at 8:30 a.m. Eastern Standard Time and Walton-Verona takes on Owensboro Catholic (16-8) at 10:30 a.m.

Beechwood goes 1-2 in All A State Pool Play
The Tigers (9-10) may not have made it to the second day, single elimination bracket.
But Beechwood did not leave Owensboro without the first All “A” State Tournament win in school history. The Tigers knocked off the Highlands Latin Highlanders (10-9), 19-3 in five innings scoring 13 times in the top of the fifth taking advantage of eight Highlands Latin errors.
The Tigers batted an amazing .425 (17-for-40) overall. Senior left fielder Lynden Noll went 4-for-4 with a home run, double, four runs batted in and scored three runs. Senior shortstop Laney Hatridge went 3-for-5 with a triple, double, five RBI and scored three runs. Junior third baseman Katelynn Murphy went 2-for-5 with two doubles, three RBI and scored four times.
Beechwood saw six players record multi-hit games and eight of the nine spots record at least one hit. Senior second baseman Katie Rolf went 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored three runs. Senior first baseman Lexi Engelman went 2-for-4 with two RBI and scored once. Sophomore flex player Willow Million went 2-for-4 with one RBI and scored once. Senior center fielder Addison Durrett scored twice.
Senior Brooklyn McGuire pitched a complete game striking out four, walking two and allowing seven hits and three earned runs. The Tigers committed one error behind her.
Beechwood lost its two other pool play games. The Tigers lost 10-6 to Raceland and 10-0 to Ballard Memorial in five innings.
Beechwood takes on Ludlow (3-16) at home Monday at 5:30 p.m.
