Heavy rains forced the cancellation of the area baseball and softball games.
But the Highlands baseball and softball teams concluded their spring break trips with mixed results. The Highlands baseball team (4-6) knocked off the Rowan County Vikings, 12-5 to finish 2-3 in the five games of the PBR Atlanta Spring Break. The Bluebirds trailed 5-4 entering the top of the sixth before scoring two in the top of the sixth and six in the top of the seventh to pull away from the Vikings (10-2).
Highlands batted .382 (13 for 34) overall. Junior Zach DeSylva went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and one run batted in. Senior Logan Weber went 2-for-4 with two RBI and one run scored. Senior Ryan DeBurger and junior Drew Barth both went 2-for-5 with one double each. Barth scored twice. Senior Jack Hendrix and junior Zachary Bracken added doubles.
DeBurger pitched the last two innings to earn the win striking out one. Junior Xander Crawford pitched the first three innings and sophomore Adam Forton pitched the next two in relief.
Highlands plays at Dixie Heights (3-5) on Saturday at Noon.
Marion Catholic (Illinois) 7, Highlands softball 2
The Bluebirds (7-2) finished the trip to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina 3-2 with the loss. Senior pitcher Kennedy Baioni (3-1) pitched the first four innings taking the loss and striking out seven. Senior Carly Cramer pitched the last three innings.
Highlands batted .240 (6 for 25) in the loss. Junior shortstop Bailey Markus went 3-for-4 with a stolen base and run scored and Cramer went 2 for 3 with a triple and RBI.
Highlands travels to Simon Kenton (7-2) on Monday for a 5:30 p.m. game.
