The Simon Kenton Pioneers girls soccer team ended its six-game losing streak with a confidence boosting 1-0 home win over the Conner Cougars.
Alexis Howard scored the goal for the Pioneers (4-6) and Macie Bach had the assist.
“We challenged them to come out and fight for every 50/50 ball, fighting to hold possession, fighting to finish the opportunities that we’ve had so many of in the past couple games, then fight to win,” said Hillary Johnson, Simon Kenton head coach. “They came out and did it from the bench to the field. Everybody played a part in the win. It was a great crowd. We had lot of fans there and fellow Simon Kenton athletes supporting. It was just a great environment.”
Junior goalkeeper Fayth Tomlin had seven saves for the Pioneers. Johnson credited the Simon Kenton back line for containing Conner’s big scorers including the leading goal-scorer in Cayley Eilers, who has 12.
“I’m really proud of us as a unit,” said Avery Spaulding, Simon Kenton senior defender. “I feel like we really improved in our teamwork and communication.”
Simon Kenton plays host to Loveland (Ohio) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m. Conner (9-2-1) travels to St. Henry (4-5) on Saturday for an 11:30 a.m. game.
Girls Soccer
Scott 2, Campbell County 1 (overtime)
The Eagles took down the Camels for the first time in three years to conclude district seed play with a record of 2-1.
“We talk to the girls all the time about positive energy,” said Allie Ast, Scott head coach. “It leads to a lot of wonderful things. The girls are seeing that.”
Ava Karl scored the game-winning goal in overtime for the Eagles (5-4-1) and Catherine Wiggins had the other one with goalkeeper Savannah Black recording 14 saves.
“I was really, really excited and proud of everybody,” Karl said. “I think when everyone is positive, it really keeps the energy up and everyone plays harder to do what we did (Wednesday).”
Jozie Holmes scored the goal for the Camels (3-5-2) and Valerie Stephens had the assist. Goalkeepers Abi Medaugh had four saves and Morgan Roomes two. It marked the first district seed game for visiting Campbell County.
Scott plays at Ludlow (3-3) on Saturday at 10 a.m. Campbell County plays host to Cincinnati (Ohio) McNicholas (3-2) on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Notre Dame 7, St. Henry 2
The Pandas won their seventh in a row, pulling away from the Crusaders in the second half after a 2-1 lead at halftime.
Scarlet Cogswell, Cameron Kirtley and Jane Schuh had one goal and one assist each for the Pandas (9-1). Kimmie Woeste, Maya Tully, Riley Robertson and Kate Lenihan had the other Notre Dame goals and Sadie Yapp had two assists.
Notre Dame outshot St. Henry, 26-7. Goalkeepers Hannah Renaker and Joelle Hentz had five and three saves, respectively.
Avery Pleiman and Live Schmitt had the goals for the Crusaders (4-5).
Notre Dame plays twice in the Zionsville (Indiana) Lady Eagle Invitational starting Friday at 5:30 p.m. against Evansville (Indiana) Memorial. St. Henry plays host to Conner (9-2-1) on Saturday at 11:30 a.m.
Highlands 4, Beechwood 0
The Bluebirds took down the Tigers for their second straight win.
Highlands (6-2) outshot Beechwood, 18-3. Natalie Hinegardner had two saves and Bailey Markus one for Highlands with Brooke Fowee stopping 14 for Beechwood (5-4).
Laney Smith scored two goals for Highlands with Claire Cavacini adding one goal and two assists. Kate Fausz had the other goal and Kate Jamie had an assist.
Highlands plays twice Saturday at Christian County against Murray (4-2) at 9 a.m., then Clarksville (Tennessee) at 1 p.m. Beechwood plays at Holy Cross (6-3) on Sept. 6 at 5 p.m.
Dixie Heights 3, Villa Madonna 0
The Colonels rebounded from the Monday loss to South Oldham to record a 34th District seed win.
Hailey Hall had two goals and one assist to lead Dixie Heights (8-2). Jaden Allen scored the other goal with Sydney Rommell adding an assist.
Goalkeeper Makena Lainhart recorded 32 saves for Villa Madonna (5-3-1).
Both teams play again Wednesday. Villa Madonna plays at Bishop Brossart (6-3-1) at 7:30 p.m. and Dixie Heights goes to Simon Kenton (4-6) for an 8 p.m. game.
Cooper 5, Newport Central Catholic 0
Maleah Alexander’s hat trick paced the Jaguars in their shutout victory over Newport Central Catholic.
Alexander added an assist, Liya Teferi and Kamdyn Hamilton also finding the back of the net for Cooper (5-3-2). Izabella Lawrence dished out two assists, McKayla Harsley and Emily Green with one apiece. Allie Ames and Lea Race combined for the shutout in net.
Kaitlyn Haigis made 15 saves for the Thoroughbreds (1-9).
Cooper is off until Wednesday when they play at Boone County, NewCath hosts Bellevue on Tuesday.
Holy Cross 4, Walton-Verona 1
Ivy Hoffman scored her team leading eighth and ninth goals of the season as the Indians have scored nine goals in their last two games and handed Walton-Verona their first loss of the season.
Leah Donnellon and Addison Saalfeld also scored goals, Saalfeld adding two assists while Hoffman also had an assist to her scoring total.
Suzette Klaiss made three saves in goal.
Holy Cross (6-3) hosts Beechwood on Wednesday their next time out on the pitch. Walton-Verona (7-1-1) also returns on Wednesday with a home game against district foe Grant County.
Scott County 6, Boone County 1
Lauren Franxman scored the lone goal for Boone County in their defeat.
Kamryn Simmons had the assist on the goal while Ava Mayfield made 22 saves in net.
Boone County (1-6) looks to snap a six-game losing streak on Wednesday when they host district foe Cooper.
Boys Soccer
Dayton (Ohio) Carroll 3, Covington Catholic 2
Four of the five Colonel losses this season have come by one goal, Wednesday adding another one to the tally.
CovCath (5-5-1) got goals from Jack Fleck and Cole Hubert, Fleck and Aiden Leach with assists. Auggie Eilerman had three saves in goal.
The Colonels have lost three of four and look to get back on track at Cooper on Thursday night at 8 p.m.

All “A” 9th Region Semifinals Set
The semifinals take place Wednesday when the host Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds take on the Beechwood Tigers at 6 p.m. and the St. Henry Crusaders take on the Bellevue Tigers at 7:30 p.m. The winners meet the next day at 7 p.m. for the championship.
Beechwood (5-2) took down the host Villa Madonna Vikings (8-4), 2-0 (25-12, 25-19) to make it to the semifinals. Isabel O’Brien had six kills, one ace, two digs and one block for the Tigers and Skylr Estep had 23 assists and four aces. Rachel Lewandowski had five kills, four blocks, one ace and one assist with Kendale Lair recording six kills, five digs and two aces. Isabel Bakker had five kills and one block with Paige Greis tallying six kills, two digs and one block.
NewCath (3-7) won twice to make it back to the semifinals for the second straight year. The Thoroughbreds downed the Ludlow Panthers (6-9), 2-0 (25-8, 25-13) then the Newport Wildcats (2-9), 2-0 (25-7, 25-9).
Against Newport, NewCath had 18 assists, 14 aces, 13 digs, one block and 24 kills. Katelyn Brannen led NewCath with six kills and Reese McCloskey had five. Kori Reckers had three kills, three aces and 12 assists. Lucy Simons had a team-high five aces and Elise Fowler had four. Vivi Fassler added six assists. Paytin Reckers and Emma Cleves had three digs each.
Against Ludlow, NewCath had six aces, 18 kills, one block, 18 assists and 27 digs. Kori Reckers had nine assists and five digs. McCloskey had five kills with Simons and Elena Henderson tallying three each. Paytin Reckers had eight digs and Jordyn Reckers added five digs and two aces.
St. Henry (5-2) knocked off Holy Cross, 2-0 (25-13, 25-13) after Holy Cross (5-1) beat Dayton, 2-0 (25-14, 25-18) to open the tournament and Bellevue (6-4) knocked off Heritage Academy (0-7), 2-1. Against Dayton (3-6), Holy Cross had 20 kills, five blocks, 17 assists, 36 digs and 13 aces. Julia Hunt led the Indians with 16 kills and three blocks. Lucy Lenihan had 10 assists and six digs with Skyler Dudderar tallying seven digs and seven aces. Olivia Gangwish had a team-high 10 digs.
Volleyball
Walton-Verona 2, Holmes 0 (25-19, 25-12)
The Bearcats took care of the visiting Bulldogs to win their fifth in a row.
Walton-Verona (7-3) had 15 kills, one block, 15 assists, 34 digs and 15 aces. Bella O’Brien had six kills and five digs with Ali Ferguson leading the Bearcats with 10 digs and Amber Hall tallying 10 assists and four aces. Macie Godwin had six aces and seven digs.
Walton-Verona plays host to Bellevue on Thursday at 7 p.m. Holmes (1-7) plays at Heritage Academy on Sept. 4 at 7 p.m.
