The Dixie Heights Colonels earned their first win of the season with a 1-0 victory over the visiting Campbell County Camels at Rice Mountjoy Stadium.

Alex Jenkins made six saves for the Camels in net and Brady Meyer made three for the Colonels.

Senior Carter Easley scored the first goal of the season for the Colonels (1-2-1). Trevor Bolte had the assist.

Dixie Heights takes on Tates Creek (2-1) on Saturday at 10 a.m. Campbell County (1-2-1) plays at George Rogers Clark (2-2) on Saturday at 11 a.m.

Boys Soccer

Ryle 3, Bishop Brossart 0

The Raiders used a penalty kick to jumpstart their offense in the final 20 minutes of the game.

Brice Denigan converted a penalty kick with Diego Hoenderkamp and Chris Maraduaga following suit with goals to pull off the win over the Mustangs.

“It was good for our team because we’d been struggling a little bit,” said Stephen Collins, Ryle head coach. “We’re still trying to find ourselves and we’re moving some guys around. This was a quality soccer team that we faced.”

Ryle (2-2) outshot Brossart (2-1-2), 16-7. Senior Landon Barth made five saves for the Raiders.

“We have a great group of guys,” Barth said. “Hopefully we can keep going up. We were on lockdown on defense. My center back saved me a couple times. It was a great, great game by the guys in the back line.”

Josh Line and Ethan Timon added assists for the Raiders.

Ryle takes on Madison Central (1-1-2) at home in the Northern Kentucky Showcase on Saturday at 4 p.m. Brossart takes on two-time defending state champion Paul Laurence Dunbar (3-0-2) on the same day at 1 p.m. at the Mustang Athletic Complex.

Cooper 2, Newport Central Catholic 1

The Jaguars ventured to Morscher Field and pulled off the 9th Region win.

Alex Winterman had one goal and one assist to lead the Jaguars (2-1-1). Landon Hughes scored the other goal and Jackson McDonald had an assist.

Chase Fields scored the NewCath goal and Vinny Petroze had the assist. Mason McCloskey had two saves in goal for the Thoroughbreds (4-1).

Cooper plays host to North Oldham (1-1-1) on Saturday and NewCath plays host to Finneytown (Ohio) at Noon. It is the first game of the season for Finneytown.

The host Valkyries made a 2-0 halftime lead stand as Highlands was able to be more in control in the game’s final 40 minutes according to Bluebirds coach Chris Norris.

Highlands (3-1) put up nine shots and sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Hinegardner had five saves. Senior Claire Cavacini scored the lone Highlands goal, trimming the Sacred Heart (3-0-1) lead to 2-1. Cavacini and Laney Smith are tied for the team lead with five goals each.

Sacred Heart scored the final goal with 1:20 left.

Highlands concludes the week at Ryle (1-3) on Saturday at 6:45 p.m.

Volleyball

Dixie Heights 3, Cooper 1

The Colonels knocked off the host Jaguars for another region win 3-1 (25-21, 25-20, 25-27, 25-21).

Maggie Best led Dixie Heights (2-0) with 23 kills and 20 digs. Christen Tarter had 27 digs and four aces and Riley Byrne had 37 assists. Maddie Kelly and Madison Offner followed Best with 11 and seven kills respectively.

Audrey Schilling had 10 kills and seven digs for Cooper (0-2). Morgan Brown and Maya Schwartz added seven kills with Sade Smith contributing 24 assists. Addie Warth and Makenna Depue followed with 14 and 12 digs respectively.

Dixie Heights plays twice Saturday at Henry County (2-0) at 10 a.m. then Trinity Christian (2-0) at 11 a.m.

Notre Dame 3, Beechwood 0

The Pandas won their third match in three days sweeping the 35th District rival Tigers 3-0 (25-11, 25-12, 25-20).

Notre Dame (3-0) had 44 kills, 10 blocks, 40 assists, 18 digs and five aces. Lacey Hostetler and Julia Grace led the Pandas with nine digs each. Hostetler added two aces.

Notre Dame setters Lauren Ott and Lizzy Larkins had 24 and 16 assists respectively. Ava Tilden and Grace Portwood had 13 and 10 kills respectively. Riley McCloskey and Teagan Kondik had eight kills each. Ella Goetz had a team-high three blocks with Tilden, Ava Erpenbeck and Kondik contributing two each.

Beechwood (1-1) had 14 kills, 15 blocks, 12 assists, 37 digs and three aces. Maggie Dawson had a team-high 11 digs with Skylr Estep recording 10 assists. Isabel O’Brien had five kills, four blocks, two aces and six digs. Isabel Baaker had five kills and Macy Armstrong added four blocks.

Notre Dame plays at Cincinnati (Ohio) Mercy-McAuley on Monday at 6:30 p.m. Beechwood plays host to Dixie Heights (1-1) on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.

Ryle 3, Newport Central Catholic 0

The Raiders earned their first win of the season on the Hill 3-0 (25-17, 25-20, 25-13).

Ryle (1-1) had 31 assists, six aces, 48 digs and 32 kills. Olivia Karlosky had 12 digs and two aces for Ryle (1-1) and Alexis Woof dug up nine balls. Morgan Heater had 24 assists with Lucy Trapp tallying 11 kills and eight digs.

NewCath had 24 assists, four aces, 47 digs and 24 kills. Kori Reckers led the way with 16 assists, six digs and six kills. Paytin Reckers had a team-high 13 digs with Jordyn Reckers and Elise Fowler contributing seven digs each. Jordyn Reckers also had two digs.

Both teams play again Tuesday. Ryle plays host to Campbell County (1-1) on at 7 p.m. NewCath travels to Conner (2-0) for a 7:30 p.m. game.

Campbell County 3, Bourbon County 0

The Camels hit the road and recorded the first win with Mikah Freppon as head coach 3-0 (25-20, 25-20, 25-10).

Campbell County (1-1) had 39 kills, 18 blocks, 34 digs, 48 digs and seven aces. Emma Manser led the way with 15 kills, six blocks including five solo and two aces. Lexi Scharold had nine kills and eight blocks including five solo.

Ella Thorwarth and A Lon McIntyre started the attack with 16 and 11 digs respectively to go with one ace each. Hope Hamilton had 20 assists, nine digs and one ace with Ava Crowl tallying 10 assists and one ace. Thorwarth also had two assists.

“One way that I saw improve a lot was just the confidence,” Freppon said. “The second we started walking into that gym, we owned the gym. We came in with a different mentality like ‘We’re getting stuff done here and we’re going to focus on what we learned in practice, whether that was connections, whether that was fundamentals – serving, passing, whatever. We’re going to win this game.”

Campbell County travels to Ryle (1-1) on Tuesday at 7 p.m.

Walton-Verona 2, Owen County 0

The Bearcats won their second straight taking down the Rebels in an 8th Region game.

Walton-Verona (2-1) had 21 kills, 21 assists, 37 digs and 10 aces overall. Isabella O’Brien had 14 digs, nine kills and three aces with Amber Hall and Makenna Simpson tallying 10 assists each. Macie Godwin had seven digs and three aces.

Walton-Verona travels to Villa Madonna (2-2) on Thursday for a 7:30 p.m. game.
