Despite the Friday nights that sometimes last into wee Saturday morning until 2 or 3 a.m. writing, editing and uploading stories to the website and social media, I always enjoy high school football season.
The goal is to give the local high school football sports fan, parents, players, relatives, community, admin, friends and so on as much coverage as possible when they wake up Saturday morning looking for scores, stories and photos.
The start of the season brings a lot of anticipation. It also brings hope. Everyone starts 0-0 and even what has happened in past years and the preseason, everyone starts with a clean slate.
The opener brings fans, coaches and players revved up for another season under the Friday Night Lights. The season starts hot and humid in August and ends in frigid temperatures in December at Kroger Field in Lexington.
Even in this basketball crazed state, football draws a large crowd, especially in the opener.
This year at LINK nky, we decided to add some fun to our coverage. We’re going to do a weekly picks contest with the three of the sports writers (Evan Dennison, Ray Schaefer and Josh Kalb) we have here and throw in a little twist…a guest picker each week. The guest picker will most likely be someone you recognize as a member of our community, whether it be someone who is on the sidelines with us, sports TV personalities, former coaches or players or someone who may not even be entrenched in the sports scene, but still invested in our communities to some capacity.
GUEST PICKER
Our first guest picker is Trent “Mr. Kentucky” Grayson. Trent has been on sidelines for many years, producing high quality content on our student-athletes from the past, present and who is next up. His quality produced is second to none and you can follow his work on Facebook, X or Instagram by simply searching up “Mr. Kentucky.”
We’ll tally the picks up each week. Each week will consist of 10 games, majority of them high school with some college and NFL (Bengals only) mixed in. Not every local team will be included, but we’ll make sure to make it hard on games that could very well be a toss up or an anticipated close one.
