See below from the Week 5 on the gridiron that was.

Each week, we’ll provide the standouts from Friday night. The top passers, rushers, receivers, defensive and kicking standouts.

We’ll also look at 10 things to take away from the week.

Here goes…

10 takeaways from Week 5

— Cooper’s Keagan Maher is now the program’s all-time leading scorer with his receiving touchdown on Friday against DuPont Manual. Maher has scored 324 points in his career, passing recent grad Isaiah Johnson with 320 points.

— Some monster tackling numbers this past Friday. A total of 19 different NKY players registered at least 10 tackles. Ludlow’s Austin Grant Ashcraft and Boone County’s Javier Diaz had 21 and 20 tackles, respectively.

— After his 15 catch, 184-yard performance, Conner’s Aydin Depenbrock now has 30 receptions for 394 yards and four touchdowns on the season. In his last three games, he’s caught 28 passes for 370 yards and four touchdowns.

— Covington Catholic’s run game has now rushed for 1,179 yards in five games. That’s good for 235 yards per game. Cash Harney has 573 of those yards with seven touchdowns, Dylan Gaiser with 380 and eight touchdowns.

— After Beechwood’s loss to Covington Catholic, the number of undefeated teams in Northern Kentucky is down to two. Lloyd Memorial is 5-0 after defeating Campbell County and Holy Cross (4-0) was on bye.

— Speaking of Beechwood, they are 44-4 in their last 48 regular season games. Those four losses have all come at the hands of Covington Catholic. The last team to beat them in the regular season from a team not in Park Hills was Dixie Heights on Oct. 2, 2020.

— Speaking of Lloyd, I don’t think Kyle Niederman gets enough credit for the job he’s done there. He’s 47-24 since taking over in Erlanger in 2019 with six playoff wins and potentially his second 10-win season on tap.

— District play begins this week! The bulk of teams get started next week, but the teams with five and six-team districts, they get underway this week. The district matchups in Northern Kentucky this week are Walton-Verona at Bracken County, Conner at Cooper, Highlands at Harrison County, Lloyd Memorial at Pendleton County, Owen County at Beechwood and Gallatin County at St. Henry.

— Is this the week Holmes snaps their 26-game losing streak? They host Jackson County, who has been outscored 133-8 on the season. It’s also Homecoming night for the Bulldogs and they are celebrating 200 years of Covington schools. Dicky Beal will walk out with the basketball team.

— Football stat leaders statewide and for each class have been released on the KHSAA website. We’ll release some statewide stat leaders later this week on the website.
