Ryle nearly pulled off another furious rally in Louisville, but came up a touchdown short in their second loss of the season.
The Raiders (4-2) trailed 31-10 with 7:41 to play in the third when they mounted their comeback.
Nathan Verax rushed for a touchdown and then hit Jacob Savage for a 11-yard touchdown with 4:42 to play to make it a one-possession game. They were unable to get the ball back as St. Xavier (4-2) picked up a couple of first downs to kill out the clock.
Savage added a rushing touchdown in the loss. Ryle just finished out a six-game stretch where they played six ranked teams in their respective class. They’ll start district play next week at home against Campbell County.
Simon Kenton 44, Ballard 43 (OT)
Brady Lee connected with Tysin Weaver in overtime, then hit Kyle King for the two-point conversion for Simon Kenton to win a thriller in Independence.
The Pioneers (3-3) and Bruins (2-4) were tied at 36 after regulation, Ballard rallying from a 36-21 deficit with 7:13 to play.
Lee hit Weaver twice for touchdowns and once on a two-point conversion in the contest. Lee and Landon Brown rushed for touchdowns with the senior quarterback throwing for four touchdowns, one to Grayson Harris and the other to King.
The two teams agreed to play earlier this week after Simon Kenton’s game with Paul Laurence Dunbar was canceled last week.
Covington Catholic 54, Grant County 0
Cash Harney combined for 166 yards passing and rushing with three touchdowns, two of them throwing to Oliver Link in Park Hills Friday evening.
The Colonels (5-2) rushed for four touchdowns in all, the defense pitching the shutout with the help of four forced turnovers. CovCath outgained the Braves 296-50. The game hit a running clock with 10:05 left in the first half, the Colonels taking a 41-0 lead into halftime.
CovCath has won five straight and continues district play at Harrison County on Oct. 18 in their next outing.
Holy Cross 38, Morgan County 8
The Indians (2-4) dominated throughout this one in West Liberty, leading 13-0 after one, 23-8 at halftime and 31-8 to start the fourth.
Kalil Johnson, Trevin Figgs and Tommy Maddox all found the end zone in the run game, Maddox also hitting Max Hunt for a 33-yard touchdown.
The Indians start district play with Bishop Brossart at Thomas More next week.
