Week one of the high school football season got off to a high scoring start in Taylor Mill on Friday night. Campbell County made the trip over to Scott for a matchup with the Eagles.

The Camels racked up 541 yards of offense in the 63-27 victory.

Lucas Anthrop threw for 187 yards and three touchdowns and ran for 189 and two more scores in the victory.

“I came in a little nervous but after the first hit you kind of get used to it. All credit goes to my line,” Anthrop said, who was later named MVP of Battle of the Bridge game.

His main beneficiaries in the passing game were Xavier Fancher, Garyn Jackson and Carson Clark, who all caught touchdown passes. Anthrop’s first career varsity start passed with flying colors.

“Lucas was behind a great quarterback last year or everyone would know him already because he could have been doing this last year,” Camels coach Brian Weinrich said. “He waited his turn and was patient and worked his butt off this offseason and I think tonight is only the beginning.”

Things got started fast for Campbell County on their first drive. Anthrop led the way early with several big keepers around the right side. A third scramble had the Camels in business early just outside the redzone at the 25-yard line. One play later running back Blake Funston took the handoff and went untouched for a touchdown with 9:28 left in the first. Funston would finish with 43 rushing yards.

Clark followed with a 25-yard receiving touchdown to make it 14-0 halfway through the frame.

It was then Trevor Bertram’s turn to get in on the scoring action, a nine-yard rushing touchdown making it 21-0.

On the opening play of the second quarter Anthrop threw a 55-yard TD pass to a streaking Xavier Fancher. The Camels were in control at 28-0.

After a couple of drives that showed some promise, the Scott offense got some things going on their next drive with a short game passing attack. Trey Cook did his best to spread the ball around and Hunter Bradley took a 12- yard reception to the 1-yard line. Kaymon Coleman finished the drive with a 1-yard plunge.

After Josh Johnson seized some momentum back for Scott with a strip and fumble recovery on Campbell County’s first play, Cook found Aaron Hampton for a 7-yard touchdown pass. The ball was tipped several times before being hauled in. The score was 28-14 with four minutes left in the half.

The Camels snagged momentum back quickly, Anthrop hitting Jackson for a 28-yard touchdown strike. The shootout was on it looked. Scott answered quickly before the half, Cook hitting Nate Brooks for a touchdown to make it 35-21.

That wasn’t it for the game’s first 24 minutes. Anthrop added a rushing TD to make it 42-21 at the break.

Kolton Morency scored the first of his two touchdowns in the third quarter, giving the Camels a 49-21 advantage with eight minutes left in the third.

Anthrop would tack on a fifty-yard score on the next drive and the running clock was in effect for the rest of the game as Campbell County led 56-21 with 5:50 left in the third.

Both teams added touchdowns from that point to make the final score.

Campbell County (1-0) plays at Beechwood next week. Scott (0-1) travels to North Bullitt.
