The Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds dominated the battle for first place in defeating Dayton, 49-8.

NewCath’s (4-4) Demetrick Welch lead the way with four rushing touchdowns. Carter Sleet also rushed for a touchdown with quarterback Louie Collopy throwing touchdown passes to Charlie Ford and Dominic Enzweiler.

NewCath travels to Bellevue (3-5) on Thursday at 7 p.m. to conclude district play and Dayton (3-5) plays host to Newport (5-3) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Football

Class 1A, District 3

Newport 68, Bellevue 24

The Wildcats built a 30-12 halftime and pulled away in the second half for the district win.

Newport (5-3) outgained Bellevue, 554-211 in total offense. Wildcats quarterback Kyle Lee completed 24-of-35 passes for 474 yards, five touchdowns and three interceptions and rushed for another. Rodzion Thompson caught eight passes for 209 yards and two touchdowns and Amantae Lowe had six catches for 85 yards and a touchdown. Kayveion Sharp had five catches for 89 yards and a touchdown with Keegan Farrell catching three passes for 62 yards.

Defensively, Khalil Buck-Barber led the Wildcats with 11 tackles including eight solo and returned a fumble recovery 23 yards. Lowe and Carvonta Roper had interceptions.

Jordan Pendleton led the Tigers (3-5) with 21 carries for 133 yards and two touchdowns and caught a 43-yard pass from quarterback Tristan Woodyard. Woodyard had two interceptions defensively and Brayden Sizemore added another one.

Bellevue plays host to NewCath (4-4) on Thursday at 7 p.m. and Newport ventures to Dayton (3-5) on Friday at 7 p.m.

Volleyball

Beechwood 3, Highlands 0 (25-23, 25-16, 25-22)

The Tigers concluded the regular season with a road 9th Region win, besting the Bluebirds for the second time this year.

Libero Maggie Dawson started the offense with 16 digs for the Tigers (24-11) and Dara Jackson had 11. Rachel Lewandowski had nine kills and six aces with Skylr Estep contributing 25 assists.

Beechwood plays at Holy Cross (23-11) in the 35th District Tournament next week. Top-seeded Highlands (18-15) takes on either Newport (7-24) or Dayton (14-18) in the 36th District semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Newport Central Catholic.

Assumption 3, Notre Dame 0 (25-19, 25-15, 26-24)

The Pandas lost the battle of the two top-ranked teams in the state. They’ve taken one of three matches against the Rockets.

Notre Dame (25-5) had 38 kills, seven blocks, 33 assists, 57 digs and one ace in the loss. Ava Tilden had 12 kills, two blocks and 11 digs to lead the way and Julia Grace had 15 digs. Riley McCloskey had 10 kills and Lauren Ott added 24 assists.

Assumption (28-5) had 39 kills, 12 blocks, 39 assists, 53 digs and seven aces in the win. Notre Dame struggled to stop Charlotte Moriarty, who had 13 kills and 11 digs. Kristen Simon added 15 digs and three aces and Emilee Fuller had 35 assists and nine digs.

Notre Dame plays in the 35th District Tournament next week at Holy Cross. 

Cooper 3, Holy Cross 1 (14-25, 25-22, 25-22, 25-18)

The Jaguars took down the Indians for another big region win.

Cooper (13-17) had 38 kills, 36 assists, 11 blocks, 54 digs and nine aces in the win. Senior setter Sadie Smith had 29 assists, 13 digs and three aces with Audrey Schilling recording 12 kills and six digs. Jill Puckett had seven kills and five blocks with Carly Schroder recording seven kills.

Libero Addy Warth had 17 digs for the Jaguars and Violet Birtcil had seven. Morgan Brown had six kills with Dani Depenbrock adding six blocks and three kills.

Holy Cross (23-11) had 54 kills, 45 assists, 65 digs, 11 aces and two blocks. Julia Hunt had 36 kills, 15 digs and three aces with Lucy Lenihan recording 27 assists, five aces and 12 digs.

Cooper plays in the Kentucky Showcase on Saturday at Paul Laurence Dunbar. The Jaguars play Tates Creek (15-14) at 9 a.m. and West Jessamine (23-9) at noon. Holy Cross plays host to Beechwood (24-11) in the 35th District semifinals next week.

Dixie Heights 3, Bishop Brossart 1 (26-28, 26-24, 25-17, 25-15)

The Colonels pulled off a victory entering the postseason.

Christen Tarter recorded 28 digs, surpassing 1,000 for her career and Maddie Kelly had 46 assists and seven aces for the 500th assist of her career for the Colonels (10-14). Maggie Best had 38 kills, 15 digs, two solo blocks and two aces with Hannah Wilson contributing 17 digs.

Dixie Heights plays host to Villa Madonna (19-7) in the 34th District semifinals next week. Bishop Brossart (21-12) plays host to Scott (20-15) in the 37th District semifinals on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
