Friday NKY HS round-up: CovCath football stays unbeaten with road district win

The Covington Catholic Colonels Colonels rolled to another sound Class 4A, District 5 win on the road Friday over the Grant County Braves, 56-6.

CovCath (7-0) outgained Grant County, 435-78. Dylan Gaiser rushed for 80 yards and two touchdowns with Ben McEvoy going for 76 and two touchdowns. Evan Pitzer and Mason Brandner added rushing touchdowns.

CovCath only threw the ball 12 times, Pitzer completing 6-of-9 attempts for 124 yards, a touchdown and one interception. Braylon Miller led the way receiving with three catches for 55 yards and a touchdown.

The Colonels scored 35 in the first quarter, building a 42-6 halftime lead to enforce the running clock. They added one touchdown in each of the third and fourth quarters.

Tucker Evans led the Colonels with six tackles with Owen Pitzer and Been Reeves recording five each. Reeves had the lone sack for CovCath.

CovCath gets a bye week before playing host to Harrison County (4-2) on Oct. 13 at 7 p.m.

Holy Cross 14, Morgan County 8

The Indians took down the Eastern Kentucky visitors in a non-district game.

Holy Cross (4-2) outgained Morgan County (4-3), 246-149. Ulysses Porter led Holy Cross on the ground with 59 yards on six carries and Trevin Figgs had a rushing touchdown. Davonte Ryan had the other Holy Cross touchdown on a two-yard touchdown pass from Donovan Ambrocio.

Holy Cross led 14-0 at halftime. Morgan County (4-3) did not score its touchdown until the fourth quarter.

Holy Cross plays at Bishop Brossart (2-4) on Friday to start Class 1A, District 4 action at 7 p.m.

Scott 40, Boone County 34

The Eagles earned their first Class 5A, District 6 win with a rally in the fourth.

Scott (2-4) trailed 34-26 before the Eagles scored 14 straight to win it. Dylan Giffen put Scott ahead for good with a 15-yard touchdown pass from Trey Cook. Giffen led the Eagles with five catches for 30 yards.

Boone County (1-5) outgained Scott, 388-291 in total offense, including a 197-156 advantage on the ground. Kaymon Coleman led the Eagles with 104 yards rushing and three touchdowns. Cook completed 10-of-14 passes for 126 yards and two touchdowns. The other one went to AJ Lowe for 51 yards.

Defensively, Giffen and Hunter Bradley had interceptions for Scott. Bradley returned his interception over 100 yards for a touchdown.

Scott plays host to Cooper (5-2) on Thursday at 7 p.m. Boone County plays at Highlands (6-1) on Friday at 7 p.m.
