With the weather starting to change, is the itch getting there to be in a gym and watch some basketball?
Well, the Northern Kentucky Girls Basketball Coaches Association is helping out a little. On Monday, they released the top 10 teams and players in Northern Kentucky. The players were nominated by their varsity coach and voted on by members of the NKHSGBCA.
With the season a little over two months away, the preseason poll/rankings give us something to talk about.
At the top of the poll is Holy Cross, coming off a region runner-up finish and is expected to return their entire starting five. Cooper follows with new coach Ryan Bowman and back-to-back Region Player of the Year Haylee Noel entering her senior season.
Simon Kenton comes in at No. 3 fresh off a Final Four appearance, Brynli Pernell will be their fearless leader while Angela Kabeya broke onto the scene as an 8th grader last season.
Last season’s 9th Region champion Notre Dame comes in at No. 4, maybe a bit of a surprise with Sarah Young still there to clog up the paint. Ryle sits at No. 5, Jayden McClain poised for a huge sophomore season.
Rounding things out 6-10 is district rivals Bishop Brossart and Campbell County at No. 6 and No. 7, Highlands eighth, Dixie Heights ninth and Walton-Verona landing 10th.
As far as players, Noel sits at the top with Pernell right on her heels. Dixie Heights’ Asia Carner, McClain and Holy Cross’ D’Myah Williams round out the top five.
From there is Scott’s Noelle Price, Bishop Brossart’s Kylie Smith, Holy Cross’ Jai Johnson, Walton-Verona’s Elin Logue and Campbell County’s Kendall Augsback to close out the top 10.
