The Newport girls basketball team avenged two regular season losses to Dayton and came out on top in Monday’s 36th District tournament quarterfinals with a 56-44 victory.
The hosts prevailed behind 27 points and 23 rebounds from senior DeAyjah White. Amariana Cook followed with 16 points making four 3-pointers and Rayona Lindsey made three triples for nine points.
Senior Zoe Sparks scored 17 points in her final game for Dayton. Tayah Smith followed with 14 points and Axie Jimenez scored nine.
Newport (7-23) takes on top-seeded Highlands in the district semifinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Dayton finished the season 8-21. The Devils graduate two seniors in Sparks and Lacey Holt.
Girls Basketball
34th District Quarterfinals at Villa Madonna
Lloyd Memorial 64, Villa Madonna 18
Sierra McCoin scored 23 points making seven 3-pointers to lead the Juggernauts to the win. Maleah Ham followed with 11 points and Mya Holden-Hopkins scored nine.
Lloyd Memorial improved to 13-17 overall. The Juggernauts return to Villa Madonna at 6 p.m. Tuesday to take on top-seeded Dixie Heights in the district semifinals.
Villa Madonna concluded the season 6-21 overall. The Vikings graduate just one senior in Madeline Mitchell.
Boys Basketball
33rd District Quarterfinals at Conner
Conner 79, Heritage Academy 41
The Cougars soundly advanced to the semifinals as 11 different players scored.
Brady Bushman led Conner with 19 points. Landon Warner scored 17 points and Chase Huff scored 12 points with senior forward Ben Fay scoring eight. Fay played in just his fourth game this year returning from an injury suffered during football season.
Conner (11-16) won for the eighth time in the last 10 games. The fourth-seeded Cougars take on top-seeded Cooper at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
Heritage Academy closed the season 12-15 overall. The Eagles graduate one senior in Jesse Gates.
34th District Quarterfinals at Villa Madonna
Ludlow 69, Villa Madonna 55
The Panthers won the rubber match against the host Vikings led by Spencer Bradenburg’s 25 points on five 3-pointers.
Elijah Perrin and Ethan Powell followed with 15 and 13 points, respectively as the Panthers made seven triples.
Ludlow moved to 18-12 overall and takes on top-seeded Lloyd Memorial in the district semifinals on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Villa Madonna finished the season 14-15. Aiden Day scored 23 points making five 3-pointers to lead the Vikings and Henry Thole scored 13.
Villa Madonna graduates seven seniors. They are Thole, Adam Brandstetter, Colston Coppage, Logan Lewis, Jonah Martin, Jacob Watson and Tommy Wenning.
36th District Quarterfinals at Newport
Bellevue 68, Dayton 52
The Tigers victory earns them a spot in the semifinals against Newport on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
Newport won the lone regular season meeting, 80-41 on Jan. 31.
Bellevue improved to 19-11 with the win. Dayton closes their season with a 5-23 record under first year head coach Darian Witherspoon. The Greendevils graduate five seniors: Landon Graham, Eric Iacobucci-Puchta, Mason Johnson, Eric Solano and Elijah Sullivan.
