The Walton-Verona boys basketball team (9-3) found itself in a battle in the opening round of the All “A” 8th Region Tournament against the Williamstown Demons (7-6) at Gallatin County.

Senior Carter Krohman hit a three-pointer at the buzzer in overtime to lift the Bearcats to a 74-71 victory. Krohman finished with 23 points making seven 3-pointers. Juniors Max Montgomery, Julian Dixon and Zach Smith followed with 16, 15 and 10 points respectively.

“It was about confidence at that point,” Krohman said. “Earlier in the game, I didn’t have the best shooting performance. It was about going on to the next one. It went down and all was well.”

The Bearcats had 10 assists, 29 rebounds, three blocked shots, 18 fouls and seven turnovers. Dixon had 14 rebounds for a double-double.

The Demons also had four players in double figures to go with 35 rebounds, 13 fouls and 17 turnovers. Senior guard Gunner Feagan led the way with 20 points and junior guard Colton Feagan scored 18. Freshman guard JaVonte Yangoua scored 17 points and senior guard Lucas Masters scored 11.

“It was your typical game of runs,” said Mike Hester, Walton-Verona head coach. “Then in the second half, they pretty much held the lead. We made the adjustment to press a little and put some pressure on the guards. We were able to force some turnovers. We made some things happen.”

Walton-Verona takes on Eminence (7-5) back at Gallatin County on Wednesday at 6 p.m. The Bearcats downed the Warriors, 91-62 at home Dec. 2.
