The Simon Kenton Pioneers baseball team (14-5) edged the host Beechwood Tigers, 10-9 in the David Iery Invitational scoring the game-winning run in the top of the seventh.
Senior right fielder Ian Powell walked in the top of the seventh with one out and senior Ben Stephens reached on an error. After they moved up one base on a wild pitch, junior Bailey Rump grounded out to score Powell.
Simon Kenton batted .375 (12-for-32) in the win. Senior Dakota Brown led the Pioneers going 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Junior Logan Cones went 2-for- 4 with one RBI and one run scored. Junior Daniel Uhl went 2-for-5 with one run scored. Powell doubled and scored twice with senior third baseman Gavin Riley homering and driving in three.
Uhl started for Simon Kenton and Stephens took over after the second inning. Brown took over in the sixth and earned the win.
Beechwood (14-4) batted .300 (9 for 30) overall. Senior Cam Boyd went 3-for-3 with a double, home run, four RBI and two scored. Senior second baseman Nazario Pangallo went 2-for-4 with one RBI and two runs scored. Eighth grade center fielder Tyler Fryman scored twice.
The Tigers also used three pitchers. Junior Brett Hoskins pitched one inning before freshman Sawyer Carlisle took over pitching the next four and striking out four. Sophomore Keagan Hutton pitched the last two taking the loss.
Simon Kenton plays at Ryle (14-7) on Monday at 5:30 p.m. Beechwood plays Bracken County (12-4) in the All “A” Sectional game Sunday at 4 p.m.
Walton-Verona 10, Campbell County 9
The Bearcats (15-3) trailed the Camels, 9-5 in the top of the seventh, but rallied for the win. Senior Ed Drohan doubled home three to put the Bearcats up in the Mike Epplen Dirty Hat Classic.
Walton-Verona batted .355 (11-for-31) overall. Senior center fielder Ethan Mills went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBI for the Bearcats. Senior Evan Kerns went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBI with freshman third baseman Bronson Corpus going 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and scored twice. Hager and senior Lance Coleman added doubles.
Sophomore Aidan Kerns struck out three in relief pitching the sixth and Evan Kerns pitched the seventh for the save. Evan Kerns struck out one retiring the side in the bottom of the seventh.
Campbell County (15-5) batted .414 (12-for-29) overall. Senior shortstop Aydan Hamilton went 3-for-4 with a double, two RBI and scored three runs with senior second baseman Jake Gross going 2-for-4. Freshman Tyler Schumacher went 2-for-3 with a double, RBI and scored twice. Sophomore right fielder Carson Clark went 2-for-3 with a double, triple and batted in two. Senior first baseman Braden Kramer also batted in two.
Sophomore Zach Franzen started and pitched into the sixth striking out three and walking three. Junior Gavin Bell took over in relief taking the tough loss striking out one and walking three.
Walton-Verona plays at Holy Cross (9-13) on Monday at 5 p.m. Campbell County plays host to Boone County (6-11-1) at the same time.
