Notre Dame 2, Grant County 1 (10 innings)
The Pandas (5-1) recorded a huge home win over the Braves (6-10) in the bottom of the 10th when eighth grade third baseman Addie Zinser hit a sacrifice fly to left to score senior left fielder Tori Danneman.
Notre Dame recorded five hits off Grant County sophomore standout pitcher Bri Knochelman. Danneman went 2-for-5 with a double and junior center fielder Ava McKinley went 2-for-3.
“(Knochelman) just has a good mix. She does throw a rise ball,” said Joe Stephenson, Notre Dame head coach. “She works both sides of the plate. She’s just tough. (Zinser) is just a good hitter. She was long on her at bats earlier in the game. We just kept telling her to stay short to the ball. She’s young. But she’s got some experience. She’s played a lot of ball. She gets in there and she’s not afraid of the moment.”
Knochelman struck out 22 and walked two overall. But sophomore Abby Turnpaugh struck out 12 and walked two allowing eight hits to give Notre Dame a chance in extra innings.
“She threw tough out there,” Stephenson said of Turnpaugh. “She’s got her team’s back. Even if there’s a mistake here or there, she doesn’t get upset. She just does a good job of staying composed. She pitched a whale of a ballgame.”
Notre Dame plays at Dixie Heights (7-9) at 5 p.m. Wednesday.
