The Covington Catholic Colonels baseball team (6-1) recorded a Ninth Region win at home over the Newport Central Catholic Thoroughbreds 4-1.
CovCath moved to 5-1 in 9th Region play with the win. NewCath (3-5) has lost four in a row.
The Colonels batted .240 (6 for 25) overall in the victory. Sophomore shortstop Jackson Reardon went 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Senior catcher Jonathan Fitz went 2-for-4 with a double, one run batted in and one run scored. Senior first baseman Max Lawrie batted in two.
Junior Bradley Zekl (1-0) started and pitched five innings for the win for CovCath. Senior Chris Young pitched the sixth and junior Charlie Dieruf pitched the seventh to record the save and striking out two.
NewCath batted .120 (3 for 25) in the loss. Sophomore Ian Mann tripled and junior third baseman Noah Ohradzansky had a double.
Junior Connor Seiter picked took the loss for NewCath striking out five. Mann pitched the sixth inning.
Neither team plays again until Monday. CovCath plays at Dixie Heights (3-5) at 5 p.m. and NewCath goes to Scott (2-5) for a 5:30 p.m. game.

Bishop Brossart 8, Holy Cross 2
The Mustangs (7-5) downed the visiting Indians (5-8) in a non-region game.
Both teams had seven hits. But Brossart junior center fielder Alex Amin and senior right fielder Evan Moore had doubles driving in two each. Mustangs senior catcher Colin Combs drove in three.
Junior Brandon Burkhardt (3-1) pitched the first five innings to earn the win striking out two and walking three. Sophomore Alex Noe pitched the sixth and sophomore Ben Volmer pitched the seventh.
Senior designated hitter Will Lachmann led the Indians going 3-for-4. Senior Jason Dorning (1-1) pitched into the fourth taking the loss striking out three and walking five. Sophomore Brady Neff relieved Dorning, striking out two.
Both teams play again Monday. Brossart plays Lloyd Memorial (1-3) at home at 5 p.m. and Holy Cross plays Highlands (4-6) at 6 p.m.
