The Highlands High School varsity dance team secured the program’s first-ever national championship.
While participating at the National Dance Alliance National Championship competition, held from Feb. 14 through 16, in Orlando, Highlands competed against more than 40 teams across the country in the ‘Medium Pom’ category.
At the Pom competition, the Bluebirds’ routine earned first place in the country. Additionally, Highlands placed second among eighteen teams nationally in the ‘Hip-Hop’ category.
“Going to Orlando to show the world and the dance community that we have a name and we can do what we’re meant to do is really cool,” Highlands junior Elise Hellmann said in a press release. The Bluebirds relied not only on skill and work ethic, but the team leaned on invaluable group camaraderie to reach uncharted territory within the program.”
The 2024-2025 dance season has been a successful one for the Bluebirds, as Highlands won first place in Pom and first place in Hip Hop at the state level for the first time in school history.
Highlands’ varsity dance team traveled to Frankfort on Friday to celebrate the state championship in front of the Kentucky General Assembly.
