The 2023 KHSAA golf season came to a close on Saturday at the state tournament on the grounds of Bowling Green Country Club.
Ryle was the team qualifier out of Northern Kentucky and finished seventh out of the nine teams that made it, just two strokes out of the top five. The Raiders shot a 36-hole score of 72-over-par, Madison Central taking the team title at 27-over-par.
Paxton McKelvey led the Raiders with a 36-hole score of 11-over, finishing in a tie for 25th out of the 89 golfers that participated. Following McKelvey was Tanner Lorms in a tie for 36th at 14-over, Palmer McKelvey in 54th at 20-over, Andrew Raoch in 68th at 27-over and Jake Roscoe 84th at 36-over.
The Raiders sat in ninth after Friday’s round, but gained ground on Saturday by shooting the fourth lowest team score with a 315 and improving their position. Following Madison Central was South Oldham at 39-over, St. Xavier in third at 49-over.
Newport Central Catholic’s Caleb Eaglin finished in a tie for 36th at 14-over. Eaglin was in the top 25 after his first 18 carded a 76, then shooting a 82 on Saturday. Saturday’s round marked the end of his high school golfing career as he’ll take his talents to Northern Kentucky University next year to play for the Norse.
Christian Academy-Louisville’s Brady Smith won the state individual title for the second straight year, beating the field by seven strokes and finishing eight-under par. Smith shot a 65 on Friday, 71 on Saturday. Oldham County’s Tyler Wirth and Madison Central’s Warren Thomis tied for second at one-under.
