Beechwood will head to Campbellsville High School this weekend with some unfinished business.

A year after making the All “A” state championship, the Tigers will look to seal the deal this time around as they’ll take on Hazard in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 10 a.m.

Beechwood run-ruled Bracken County 10-0 on Sunday in the All “A” sectional game, Matthew Kappes throwing a complete game six-hitter while Cam Boyd and Ben Meier provided the power at the plate.

Boyd hit his seventh homerun in his last 11 games with a two-run shot in the bottom of the first, the Tigers taking advantage of a two-out error by the Polar Bears in the bottom of the second for five runs.

The error, which would have been the third out of the inning, led to run-scoring doubles from Boyd and Meier, Meier’s double plating two to make it 7-0.

After a few scoreless inning and Kappes scattering some hits, the Tigers ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with three runs, the Polar Bears committing two more errors and Tyler Fryman’s sac fly with the bases loaded bringing in Meier for the game ending run.

The win gets Beechwood to 15-4 on the season, shaking off a one-run loss to Simon Kenton on Saturday in the David Iery Invitational championship game. Beechwood has won eight of nine with a 35th District seed game on Wednesday before they head Southwest for the All “A” state tournament.

Kappes struck out six and walked one in the victory. He’s now 5-0 with a 2.21 ERA on the season. Nazario Pangallo and Michael Detzel scored two runs apiece, Boyd scoring three runs on the day as he also reached on an error.

In the 2022 season, Beechwood lost to Pikeville 10-7 in the championship game of the All “A”. If they win their Saturday morning contest, they’ll then be looking at the winner of the Somerset-Sayre sectional winner taking on Pikeville. Sunday’s semifinal is scheduled for 8:30 a.m., the championship on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Walton-Verona is on the bottom half of the bracket, opening up with the host Campbellsville on Saturday at 3 p.m. The Bearcats defeated Highlands Latin on Thursday in their sectional game, 9-5. They rallied from a 5-3 deficit to advance to the quarterfinals.

Jimmy Shields had four RBI in the contest to go with three hits, Ethan Mills also collecting three hits while Ethan Hager and Bryce Corpus went 2-for-4. Corpus came in and nailed down the save, pitching the final 1.2 innings scoreless with a hit and walk allowed.
