WALTON-VERONA BASEBALL
The Bearcats claimed yet another Eighth Region All “A” Championship, their third straight with wins over Owen County (4-2) in the quarterfinals, Eminence (6-0) in the semifinals and Carroll County (10-1) in the championship.
In the quarterfinal victory over Owen County, Cayden Smithers and Ethan Hager had multiple-hit games, Ed Drohan, Lance Coleman and Jimmy Shields driving in runs. Bronson Corpus picked up the win in four innings on the bump, Bryce Corpus striking out four in two innings while Mason Howard struck out three in an inning of work.
In the semifinal win over Eminence, Evan Kerns was lights out on the hill, pitching a complete game with 12 strikeouts and just two hits allowed. Bryce Corpus provided the punch at the plate with three RBI, Coleman with two.
To claim the championship, the Bearcats collected 12 hits, Shields with four and Coleman with three. Coleman had three RBI and Smithers with two while Howard pitched a complete game three-hitter with eight strikeouts.
They’ll play Highlands Latin on Friday in the first round of the All “A” state tournament. A win there would get them a matchup with host Campbellsville in the quarterfinals on Saturday, April 29. The Bearcats are doing it with their pitching, allowing 12 runs over their last nine games, winning seven of those nine as they’re currently 11-3 on the season.
DIXIE HEIGHTS GIRLS TRACK TEAM
Dixie Heights finished runner-up in the 17-team Bearcat Classic on Friday with 44.5 points, five off from first place Anderson (OH).
Collecting nearly half of their points was Caroline Hooper and Sidney Hiltz in the high jump, finishing 1-2. Hooper cleared five-feet, while Hiltz did 4-feet-8 inches. Relays also played a huge part, the 4×100 team finishing first, the 4×200 and 4×800 teams finishing runner-up.
CAMPBELL COUNTY BASEBALL
The Camels are rolling, going 5-0 last week as they currently ride an eight-game winning streak. Their week started with a run-rule victory over Cooper (17-5), followed by victories over Dixie Heights (9-0), Holy Cross (10-0), Greenup County (4-3) and Newport Central Catholic (11-1). They outscored the opponent 51-9 during the week.
Standouts over the week at the plate were Zach Franzen with three multi-hit games, Jake Gross with two, Tyler Schumacher with two, Aydan Hamilton with two and Evan Clark with two. On the mound, Chris Bramley pitched a complete game against Cooper, Max Lause throwing six shutout innings against Dixie, Braden Kramer with a no-hitter against Holy Cross, Tyler Schumacher picking up the win against Greenup with two scoreless innings and Gross throwing six shutout innings against NewCath.
Campbell County looks to make it nine in a row against Scott in a 37th District matchup on Tuesday.
HIGHLANDS BOYS TENNIS
The Bluebirds went 3-0 last week with wins over Beechwood (4-1), Montgomery County (5-0) and Harrison, Ohio (4-1).
