SCOTT EAGLES GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

Scott now owns their longest winning streak of the season after three straight victories at the Pam Browning Classic last week with wins over Shelby County (80-41), Letcher County Central (52-43) and Carroll County (57-54).

It truly was a team effort for the Eagles in the three wins as 13 different players scored in the tournament led by Kayla Overman’s 13.6 points per game. Presley Grant added 11.3 points per game, Autumn Ponder at 8.3 points per game, Kaia Peterson with eight points per game and Ava Coleman and Kayla Peterson with five points per game.

Overman, Kayla Peterson, Coleman and Kaia Peterson were a force on the boards with 7.0, 6.6, 6.0 and 4.0 rebounds per game, respectively.

NEWPORT CENTRAL CATHOLIC THOROUGHBREDS GIRLS BASKETBALL TEAM

Newport Central Catholic won the Stephanie Wilson Memorial Tournament on Friday at Bellevue with a 55-36 victory over Lloyd Memorial. Evan Dennison | LINK nky

The Thoroughbreds breezed through the Stephanie Wilson Memorial Tournament last week with double-digit wins over Frankfrot (62-32), Beechwood (53-40) and Lloyd Memorial (55-36), in winning their fourth straight overall.

Caroline Eaglin was named MVP of the tournament after scoring 77 points in the three games, Jaylee Brannen and Joelle Kinnett were named to the All-Tournament team.

To open up the tournament in the win over Frankfort, Jaylee Brannen and Eaglin scored 17 points apiece, Delany Green and Kinnett adding eight points each. NewCath was efficient from the free throw line, hitting 19-of-25 attempts.

Eaglin poured in 32 points in the win over Beechwood, Green draining four triples on her way to 12 points. Eaglin also added 10 rebounds as her 24.0 point per game average currently has her fourth in the state in points per game.

Eaglin was again instrumental in the win over Lloyd, posting 27 points as they struggled to pull away from the Juggernauts until they locked in during the fourth quarter defensively, allowing just six points.

COOPER JAGUARS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

The Jaguars have been to each side of the state these past two weeks and came away winners in four out of five contests.

Last week they disposed of Butler County (59-48) and Breckinridge County (74-41), going 2-0 in the Independence Bank Classic in Owensboro.

In the victory over Butler County, it was a balanced effort offensively getting the job done as six different players scored at least six points apiece. Andy Johnson was a big boost offensively in the two contests with 14 points in each game. Isaiah Johnson added 11 points, Gavin Lutz nine, Trevor Ollier eight with eight rebounds, Isaac Brown seven and Drew Schilling six.

Lutz led the way in the win over Breckinridge with 16 points, Andy Johnson’s 14 and Yamil Rondon’s 12 pacing the Jags. They also hit 15-of-17 from the free throw line.

They’ve hung their hat on the defensive side of the floor in the past five contests, allowing just 45 points per game. The 49.8 points per game allowed this season for the Jaguars is currently good for ninth in the state.

ST. HENRY CRUSADERS BOYS BASKETBALL TEAM

The Crusaders went 2-0 last week with wins over Ludlow (86-49) and Scott (78-69) to win their third straight overall.

The win over Ludlow got them off to a 2-0 start in 34th District play as Braden Fedders scored 21 points and pulled down eight rebounds, making 8-of-10 shots from the field. The Crusaders ran away with this one early and got the game to a running clock in the second half. Three others hit double figures in the win, Matthew Resing scoring 16 points, Ethan Kaiser with 14 and Andrew Reis chipping in 11 as 10 different players entered the scoring column.

Fedders followed up the Ludlow performance with a 30-point, nine rebound effort against the Eagles, hitting 12-of-13 shots from the field. Resing added 28 as the Crusaders hit 57 percent of their shots from the field.

St. Henry’s season has been a streaky one to open up, winning their first two, losing seven in a row and now having won three in a row entering their Tuesday contest with Dixie Heights.
