New division, new look.

As has been the case for multiple athletic facilities at Thomas More University, the softball field will also be getting a makeover, turning it from a field into a complex.

Turf is coming to the outfield, as are turfed batting cages, two turfed bullpens, a new scoreboard, netting along the third base line, a new outfield fence with windscreen, new backstop and netting, set bleachers and concrete walkways.

In addition, a new locker room and concessions building also come with the renovation.

“This upgrade continues our commitment to elevating the reputation and brand of Thomas More athletics as we begin our transition to the NCAA DII and to creating a student experience that is designed for success in the classroom and on the field,” Thomas More president Joseph L. Chillo said.

The project is expected to be completed by June 2024. They’ll continue to play on the field through the renovation, according to the University.

The softball team finished 17-29 in the 2022 season and 11-20 in Mid-South Conference play, losing to Lindsey Wilson in the opening round of the conference tournament. They begin their 2023 season on February 25 against Trinity Christian at Thomas More Field. Lindsey Eagan enters her 15th season as head coach, amassing 364 wins, seven conference championships and eight NCAA tournament appearances.

Thomas More will be competing in Division II beginning in the 2023-24 academic year. They’ll have a two-year mandatory transition period before becoming eligible for NCAA championships in 2025-26. They’re in their final year of NAIA competition in the Mid-South Conference. In Division II, they’ll join the Great Midwest Conference and be eligible for conference championships and tournaments immediately.

The softball field upgrade is part of a five-year strategic plan in improving athletic facilities on and off campus. In March, the University partnered with the Florence Y’alls baseball team in renaming the ballpark “Thomas More Stadium”. The Saints will start playing there for the 2023 season.

Renovations to Republic Bank Field, home of football, track and field, soccer, rugby, lacrosse and cross country were done in 2021.

“I’m very excited for this facility upgrade that will greatly benefit our student athletes and coaches,” Athletic Director Terry Connor said. “Thomas More supports its population of student athletes by ensuring that they have the best facilities and opportunities to succeed.”
