For the third time in four years, the Campbell County Camels won the 37th District girls soccer title with a 2-0 win over the Bishop Brossart Mustangs on Thursday evening at Scott High School.
The game was highlighted by a corner kick from sophomore forward Jozie Holmes and netted by all-district senior midfielder Addie Schumacher.
“We’ve been working on corners a lot,” said Dave Morris, Campbell County head coach. “We’ve had like 30 corners in three games, and we’ve been working on various plays a lot and one of them worked out (Thursday).”
Campbell County has gone 6-0-4 in its last 10 games. Senior midfielder Ambria Poynter scored the other Campbell County goal on an assist from senior forward Ruby Dunlevy.
“About a month ago, we were struggling with injuries and things like that and got healthy again and all of the seniors started stepping up more as the season went on. As we move forward, we got to play our game,” Morris said. “Our game is a possession game. We played possession well early then we got into a run-and-gun-type of offense and Brossart is better at that than us. If we play our game, a possession game, we’ll be successful moving forward…It’s great to win the district again and hopefully we can show well in the region.”
Campbell County senior goalkeeper Morgan Rawe had eight saves and Bishop Brossart senior goalkeeper Lauren Gooderson had six.
The Camels will now seek their second consecutive 10th Region crown.
