Covington Latin’s archery team will compete in the national tournament after qualifying at the state level earlier this month.
The team scored 3,102 at the Kentucky National Archery in Schools Program (NASP) state tournament in Louisville on March 12.
Now the team progresses to the NASP Eastern Nationals Tournament in May.
Since starting the program in 2015, the team has competed at the state tournament every season, and this will be their fourth time competing at the national level. They will be looking for a repeat of the 2018 season where they advanced to the World Tournament Competition.
The team had 20 students competing at the state tournament, three of whom have signed to play collegiate archery in the fall at Division II schools. Students can start in the archery program as young as 7th grade. NASP Archery is a co-ed KSHAA sanctioned sport. All CLS Archery competitors have also achieved Academic Archer standing.
A standout from this year’s team, Monica Juelg, will be hoping to help lead the team to victory during the national tournament. Juelg placed in the top 20 (out of 387) of all 10th-grade girls, the top 2% of all (4,064) girls during the state tournament and was the first girl to join the CLS 280 Club for her score of 281.
She also recently joined the CLS 50 Club by hitting an inner Bullseye – worth 50 points – during the State Qualifier Crusader Cup.

Jacob Schuetter also scored over 280, earning him a spot in the Top 25 of all senior boys (285) and the top 1% of all (4,628) boys competing in the state tournament.
“Archery truly is an amazing sport,” Juelg said. “Someone can go from missing the target every time to shooting a perfect end. I speak from experience because that is exactly what I did when I joined archery. Now, however, I have shot a perfect 50, and become the only Trojan female archer to join the 280 club. I think that archery is a great sport because it is easy to learn as long as you have the proper form and the desire to succeed. Our team will be competing in nationals because we build each other up and are determined to do our very best no matter what.”
