Sam Vinson earns Nike® Horizon League Men’s Basketball |
Northern Kentucky guard Sam Vinson as been named the Nike® Horizon League Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week for the fifth time this season.

The guard from Fort Thomas, Ky. averaged 19.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.0 steals in NKU’s 2-0 week. Vinson set career highs in points (24), field goals made (9), field goals attempted (18) and free-throw attempts (8) in an overtime thriller at UIC Jan. 20. Vinson scored five of NKU’s nine points in overtime to help defeat the Flames 74-70 at Credit Union 1 Arena in Chicago.

In the Norse’s 60-41 triumph at IUPUI Jan. 22, Vinson scored a team-second 15 points behind 2-of-4 perimeter shooting and 3-of-3 free throws. He added five assists, two rebounds, a block and a steal at Indiana Farmers Coliseum in Indianapolis.
Vinson is averaging 11.3 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.1 steals in 32.6 minutes and has started all 17 of the Norse’s games. He ranks 27th in the country in steals per game and 35th in total steals (36).
Vinson previously was named Nike® Horizon League Men’s Basketball Freshman of the Week Nov. 22, Nov. 29, Dec. 13 and Jan. 3.
The Norse recently went 3-1 in a four-game road swing. They’re poised for a five-game home stand at BB&T Arena, beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday against Horizon League foe Wright State.
