EXPANSION GRAND OPENING SET FOR BILL & BETSY SCHEBEN CARE CENTER, SEPTEMBER 24TH

FLORENCE, Ky. — Five thousand additional square feet of space, two expanded program rooms, two additional ADA bathrooms, two secure outdoor areas and a new dedicated nursing space are the highlights of the Expansion Grand Opening set for Thursday, September 24th (5-7 p.m.) at The Bill and Betsy Scheben Care Center – 31 Spiral Drive, Florence, Kentucky.
The Bill & Betsy Scheben Care Center offers medical-model adult day care and transportation services for the elderly and adults with intellectual and developmental (I/DD) differences.
The facility provides person-centered programs that enhance the educational, therapeutic, and social opportunities for all enrolled. The program includes group activities, community outings, and individual activities such as musical programs, gardening Wii, films, games, crafts, speakers, and visitors.
“This expansion will allow us to serve an additional 30 individuals with our expanded program space,” said Lisa West, Executive Director, who has been with The Center 27 years.
“We have also enhanced our program by providing dedicated nursing treatment space; and we added a very large, secured outdoor area for use by our individuals, along with a smaller, secured outdoor space for our more medically fragile individuals,” she said.
The Adult Day Care Program serves persons over 16 years-of-age, who have medical, physical, social and/or cognitive disabilities. The Center’s service-area includes residents of the seven counties that comprise Northern Kentucky: Kenton, Boone Campbell, Grant, Pendleton, Owen and Gallatin Counties.
The services provided by the program include:
• Medical and Nursing Services
• Individual plan of care that includes: A health and functional assessment; a plan of care that identifies the person’s strengths and needs, specific goals to meet the needs, and activities to reach the goals; notes on progress toward goals; reassessment; and a discharge plan and summary
• Administration of medications
• Supervised rest periods (if needed)
• Emergency medical care plan and provision of first aid
• Consultation with and referral to personal physician as needed
• Monitoring of health status (e.g., vital signs, intake/output monitoring, monitoring blood sugar level)
• Activities to promote health maintenance
• Carrying out or supervising simple treatments ordered by the individual’s personal physician (supplies not provided)
A registered practical nurse (s) is available to the program staff and individuals at all times.
Adult Day Care has three major goals:
• To provide daytime nursing care and supervised activity based on rehabilitation principles to medically compromised and/or disabled adults in order to maintain their ability to function in the home and community
• To provide respite for families/caregivers in order to reduce the physical, emotional and financial stress experienced during long-term care
• To prevent unnecessary or premature institutionalization of persons appropriate for the intermediate level of nursing home care.
The program operates in compliance with the standards recommended by the National Adult Day Services Association (NADSA) and the licensing regulations of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
The Point/Arc of Northern Kentucky welcomed The Bill & Betsy Scheben Care Center in 2016. “We are blessed to be part of The Point/Arc family,” stated Ms. West. “Under their leadership, our program has grown to the point where we have a significant waiting list.”
Founded in 1923 by the Covington Rotary Club and known as the Kentucky Society for Crippled Children, Cardinal Hill of Northern Kentucky (formerly Northern Kentucky Easter Seals) had a long and dedicated history of providing programs and services that meet the needs of adults with disabilities. The mission – to help differently-abled adults achieve maximum independence by providing them with benchmark rehabilitative and daily care services that meet their needs.
As demographics shifted, there was a strong need for services in the booming area of Boone County. As a result, in 2001 the Florence (Ky.) Center was opened and by 2003 the program moved to their new facility.
In 2016, The Center was renamed after Bill & Betsy Scheben who have been the longest and most dedicated supporters of the programs.
The current facility was designed to best meet the goals of the Medical Model Adult Day Care, Adult Training Program, and transportation program.
• The Medical Model Adult Day Health Care and Adult Day Training programs offer nursing support, therapeutic gardening, community outings, social interaction, and The Center is the only facility in Northern Kentucky to provide services to trach-dependent individuals.
• The transportation program has grown to accommodate 11 handicap accessible vehicles, transporting individuals to the program, two other day programs in the region, two sheltered workshops, and numerous community jobs. The Center also provides transportation services for the Zembrodt Education program at The Point/Arc.
The mission of the Point/Arc’s Bill & Betsy Scheben Care Center is to help adults with and without an I/DD maintain and grow their ability to function in their homes and communities.
The Center serves people over 16 with medical, physical, social and/or cognitive disabilities.
Ms. West has her own name for The Center. “It’s The House that Scheben Built,” she says; as this was the last project she worked on with Bill Scheben.
