INDEPENDENCE, KY – A 3rd grader from Piner Elementary is getting a taste of the restaurant world after winning Spear Ridge Café’s “Design a Burger” contest, earning a spot on the menu with her own creation.

Earlier this month, Spear Ridge Café invited students across Boone and Kenton County to submit their burger ideas. The contest brought in dozens of entries, from classic combinations to some pretty creative builds. After more than 1,600 community votes, Hazel Vice was named the winner, receiving over 600 votes.

Hazel’s burger features a beef smashburger topped with lettuce, creamy mac and cheese, pulled pork, BBQ sauce, and a pickle.

On Wednesday evening, Hazel got to see her idea come to life at the Independence location. She joined the team in the kitchen, built her burger for the first time, and shared the moment with her family and a small crowd that came out to support her.

As part of her prize, Hazel will receive free burgers for a year. Her burger, “The Hazel,” will be featured on the menu for a limited one-week run beginning Monday, March 23 at both Spear Ridge Café locations in Independence and Florence.

“We loved seeing the creativity from these kids,” said Timmy Crofford, President of Spear Ridge Café. “Hazel’s burger stood out right away, and it’s been fun to watch it come together.”

Spear Ridge Café has locations in Florence and Independence and is known for its smashburgers, breakfast, and comfort food favorites.
