About SUSUPENDED BETWEEN FORMS: Writer Zito Madu curates an exhibition of objects and installations that explore transformation represented in a variety of media. Madu’s magical realist memoir, The Minotaur at Calle Lanza, serves as a jumping off point to examine psychological and physical labyrinths, mirroring, personal and universal mythologies and the changes we undergo to navigate these scenarios.

Madu states, “Suspended Between Forms is an exploration of personal transformation. A person, like the world around them, is malleable, and whether one is aware of it or not, each person is constantly being made and remade… Every moment, every second, every step, takes one further into that journey. Deeper into the labyrinth of self. Into the endless multitude of what one has been and will possibly be.”

Zito Madu is a Nigerian-born writer who grew up in Detroit, Michigan. He now lives in Brooklyn, New York. His writing has been published in many publications, including Plough Quarterly, Victory Journal, GQ Magazine, The New Republic, and The Nation. His book, The Minotaur at Calle Lanza, is a surrealist memoir that engages with the themes of migration, poverty, foreignness, strangeness, and the interior and exterior transformations that one experiences through life, and how those transformations change our relationships to ourselves, our memories, and the world at large.

Carnegie Executive Director and curator, Matt Distel shares, “I’m excited to further The Carnegie’s gallery mission through this show with Zito. Over the last year, he’s been meeting with artists and collectors from our region in preparation for Suspended Between Forms. These connections will last long after the exhibition closes, which ultimately is the goal of our programming.”

Notably, exhibiting artists include local artist, Michael Coppage. Coppage often uses an interdisciplinary, dialectical approach to address social issues surrounding race and language. His acclaimed project, “BLACK BOX” has been exhibited at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center, 21c Museum Hotel, the Medici Museum of Art, the Ohio Arts Councils Riffe Gallery, and ArtCrawl Harlem.

Work by Brooklyn artist Beth Campbell will also be exhibited. Campbell has exhibited at major institutions like the Whitney Museum of American Art, Brooklyn Museum of Art and the PS1 Contemporary Art Center. Her work is also in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), and Whitney Museum of American Art.
