February 16, 2024 –Independence, KY– Simon Kenton High School English and reading teacher Heather Mastin has been nominated for National Life Group’s 2023-24 LifeChanger of the Year award. Sponsored by the National Life Group Foundation, LifeChanger of the Year recognizes and rewards the very best K-12 educators and school district employees across the United States who are making a difference in the lives of students by exemplifying excellence, positive influence and leadership.

Mastin was nominated by her daughter, Victoria Mastin, who explained “I am nominating my mother because I have witnessed her unparalleled dedication and impact as a teacher. She is truly the best role model I can ask for, and I think she deserves this award the most.”

Mastin’s commitment extends far beyond the classroom, where she often sacrifices personal time to create an engaging curriculum for her students, sometimes staying until 8 PM. She also was praised for her quick thinking when a student began choking in her classroom. Her swift action of performing the Heimlich maneuver ultimately saved the student’s life.

Additionally, Mastin takes proactive measures to ensure student safety and inclusivity. She had epilepsy sensitivity lights installed and is prepared to provide immediate support during student seizures. Her consideration and commitment to the well-being of her students have no limits.
