Boone County Schools announced the second phase a proposed school bus security feature Tuesday. The phase will consist of identification card readers, called Zpass readers, on school buses. The cards will contain a passive RFID chip, which students will use to show that they’re on the bus.
“The Zpass student card contains a passive RFID chip,” according to Boone County Schools. “This means the card cannot be activated or used anywhere else. It cannot be used to track a student, as it simply indicates if a student is ON a bus or NOT. Bus drivers and transportation officials will be able to immediately determine the students present on any of the district buses.”
The first phase of the project began last year with upgraded GPS tracking software on district buses. Zpass also uses a free smart device app that parents can use to check student ride status.
