Boone County elementary schools will start the day a little earlier in the 2023-2024 school year.
The move to add 10 to 15 minutes to each day’s original start time was approved by the Boone County Schools Board of Education during its March 9 meeting.
The schools requesting extensions in their school days for the 2023-2024 school year noted that increasing the instructional day at each of the elementary schools will allow for more instructional time to be provided to the students during the school day.
Superintendent Matthew Turner spelled out the rationale for the switch in schedule.
“This adjustment helps with travel time when our buses are arriving and dropping students off,” Turner said. “It provides a little bit of extra time for students that may need to eat breakfast and also provides additional instructional time for our kids there as well.”
Board Vice-Chairperson Karen Byrd emphasized to board members that these instructional time amendments are directly requested by the elementary schools.
“This is not district-driven,” said Byrd. “The elementary schools requested this.”
New start times for the 2023-2024 school year include:
- Burlington Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Collins Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Erpenbeck Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Florence Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Goodridge Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Kelly Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Longbranch Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- New Haven Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- North Pointe Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Ockerman Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Shirley Mann Elementary: adding 10 minutes, start time will be 8:45 a.m.
- Steeplechase Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Stephens Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Thornwilde Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
- Yealey Elementary: adding 15 minutes, start time will be 8:40 a.m.
