A man and woman have been charged after shots were fired Sunday afternoon at the Verona Dollar General, the Boone County Sheriff’s Office said Monday.

Alexis Lathea Beaver, 22 of Copper Hill, Virginia, admitted to firing multiple shots behind the Dollar General.

Her boyfriend, Edwin Marcos Roman Romero, 40 of Roanoke, Virginia stated that she shot
at him while arguing behind the store.

Prior to deputies arriving on scene, Beaver and Romero fled in a vehicle, the office reports. Deputies located the suspect vehicle on northbound I-71, stopped it and detained them both.

Beaver assaulted multiple deputies as they attempted to restrain her in a cruiser, according to the sheriff’s office. Additionally, she attempted to kick out the back passenger window of a cruiser, which damaged the door frame.

Deputies said they learned that Romero was a “deported criminal aggravated felon.” Given this classification and that Romero entered a vehicle with a firearm present, deputies charged him accordingly.

While on scene at Dollar General, deputies reported that they located four shell casings that they say were tampered with. Deputies processed the scene and collected the casings as well as obtained witness statements.

Deputies claim neither the Dollar General store nor its customers were targets or placed in danger and that this was an isolated incident involving only Beaver and Romero behind the store.

Beaver is charged with four counts of Wanton Endangerment 1st Degree, one count of Criminal Mischief 1st Degree, three counts of Assault in the 3rd Degree – Police Officer and one count of Tampering with Physical Evidence.

Romero is charged with one count of Possession of a Handgun by a Convicted Felon. Additionally, deputies consulted with Immigration and Customs Enforcement regarding Romero’s deported felon classification.

Both are currently lodged at the Boone County Detention Center. There is no bond set for Romero as ICE placed a detainer hold on him. Beaver’s bond is set at $100,000.
