A new road in Walton has been named in honor of two deceased local veterans.
A previously unnamed, dead-ended spur will now be known as Ross Kerns Drive in honor of Woodrow Ross Jr. and Lawrence Kerns, decorated veterans and Walton residents who passed away in 2016 and 2014, respectively.
“They were both great citizens of our small town but also very active with the American Legion,” said Mayor Terri Courtney. “This is a way to memorialize both gentlemen.”
The new street is located between the American Legion Post 277 at 415 Jones Road and 101 Richard Knock Highway.
Ross was a U.S. Marine and Vietnam veteran, as well as commander of the American Legion. Kerns was a first sergeant of the U.S. Army and a Vietnam veteran, a member of the American Legion, and a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) for 40 years.
