The city of Elsmere officially approved zoning for the cultivation, processing and selling of medical cannabis within city limits at its Jan. 14 council meeting.
The city council unanimously voted to adopt amendments to the city’s zoning ordinance, permitting medical cannabis businesses to operate cultivation and processing facilities within industrial zones, as well as dispensaries in commercial zones.
With medical cannabis seeing statewide legalization beginning Jan. 1, Elsmere put the issue on the ballot for the 2024 general elections. The city deferred to citizens to determine whether or not to authorize cannabis operations in the city via a referendum vote.
The city prohibited all businesses related to medical cannabis within city limits from July 1, 2024, to Jan. 1, in anticipation of the referendum vote. The prohibition has since been repealed.
