On April 28 at 11:30 a.m., the City of Southgate will celebrate Arbor Day.
For 18 years, Southgate has received a Tree City USA award from the Arbor Day Foundation, and it has also received the Growth Award for 17 years.
Activities will be held at the Southgate Community Center. Every year, the city honors a resident who’s passed away. This year, they’ll honor former Park and Tree Board member Juanita Bittner. Luke Saunier from the Kentucky Division of Forestry will be the guest speaker.
Besides the dedication, city council is running a poster contest for grades 3-6. Southgate Elementary students have until April 19 to enter. This year’s theme is “For the love of trees.” Last year Parker Lucas won first place for the “Trees are beautiful and unique” drawing.
For those wanting to sign up or seeking additional information, contact Aileen Okura at [email protected]. She’s also taking orders for the 100 free loblolly pine seedlings they’re giving away.
