Kentucky Attorney General Russell Coleman announced Wednesday his intent to designate Rob Sanders as a special, temporary commonwealth’s attorney for Campbell County following Michael Zimmerman’s departure from the role on Sept. 30.

Sanders is currently the elected commonwealth’s attorney for Kenton County.

Commonwealth’s attorneys serve as prosecutors handling felony cases in Kentucky counties. If a vacancy occurs mid-term, the governor appoints a replacement; however, the governor has no deadline to do so. As a result, the Kentucky Attorney General is allowed to appoint a temporary designee to serve in the role until an appointment is made or a new prosecutor is elected.

“We’re very proud of the justice we provide through community partnerships in Kenton County and working closely with law enforcement,” said Sanders in a press release from the attorney general’s office. “We’re happy to share our services with Campbell County until their new commonwealth’s attorney is appointed or elected.”

Coleman expressed his gratitude for Sanders’ willingness to take on the role.

“This office is just too important to leave vacant, and the people of Campbell County should rest easy knowing they have a team of incredible prosecutors working to keep them safe,” Coleman said in a news release.
