The Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airport is set to conduct a large-scale emergency response drill on Sept. 18.
Kicking off at 9 a.m., the drill will involve over 700 people from nearly 100 emergency response agencies. The drill will stage two aircraft crash sites on a closed runway to test response teams’ emergency preparedness in a disaster. Around 140 volunteers will portray patients with simulated injuries as emergency crews practice rescue, treatment, and recovery operations.
The drill will commence with an alert from CVG to other participating mutual aid agencies. After that, air medical crews, emergency vehicles, and other first responders will deploy to the crash sites. Mock patients will then be assessed and treated at the scene, after which they will be transported by ambulance to one of nine participating hospitals in Northern Kentucky, Cincinnati or Indiana.
CVG and St. Elizabeth Healthcare will also hold a pre-exercise media briefing at 12:30 p.m. Sept. 17, at CVG’s South Airport Rescue and Fire Station, located at 2100 Tower Drive in Erlanger.
The Federal Aviation Administration mandates the exercise, which must take place every three years.
