More than 500 backpacks stuffed with school supplies will be given away to families in need this Saturday at St. Elizabeth Healthcare in Covington.
It’s the 26th year Northern Kentucky Harvest is sponsoring the “Backpacks Bonanza” event, formerly called “Backpacks and Breakfast.”
Backpacks Bonanza organizers are donating at least 1,165 backpacks this year to low-income families, half of which have already been distributed to community partners.
“The reality is that families already struggling to pay for food, shelter, clothing and other necessities for their kids often find it difficult to accommodate back-to-school expenses,” Northern Kentucky Harvest president Paul Gottbrath said.
The giveaway event on Aug. 8 will run from 9 a.m. to noon in the parking lot of St. Elizabeth Healthcare at 1500 James Simpson Jr. Way.
Backpacks are available for preschool to high school students on a first-come, first-served basis.
Parents or guardians are instructed to bring photo identification for themselves, Social Security or medical cards for their children, and proof of address, such as a recent bill or lease.
Free Papa John’s pizza will also be available for attendees.
