The Independence City Council voted Monday to purchase a vacant lot at the intersection of Cox Road and Taylor Mill Road with the hopes of realigning the road to make it safer.
The city plans to use money it obtained from the Kenton County Community Redevelopment Fund to complete the project, and there are no plans to redevelop the site after the realignment, according to Mayor Chris Reinersman.
“We’ve had a terrible line of sight problem,” Reinersman said, “but simply acquiring that property, I think, will allow us to correct some of that.”
The intersection turns at an odd angle, and the realignment will aim to convert the turns at the intersection into something closer to right angles.
The city received $1 million from the county fund to perform the work. They must contribute $100,000 of city money to the project in order to access the funds.
The mayor said the city could possibly install a sign advertising the adjacent shopping center in the future, but stated the city did not intend to sell the land to developers.
