The Covington Independent School District Board of Education passed a resolution to become Northern Kentucky’s final river city school district to join the Read Ready Network.
The board last week joined the school boards and city governments of Covington, Newport, Bellevue, Dayton, Southgate and Ludlow to formally commit to supporting the Read Ready Network’s mission to improve kindergarten readiness and early childhood outcomes throughout the region.
The Read Ready Network is an early-learning and family-support initiative that offers families of children entering kindergarten free digital learning tools, book subscriptions, community support and shared resources.
“This is a significant moment for our region,” EducateNKY CEO Cheye Calvo said in a news release. “For the first time, all six River City governments and school districts have formally aligned around a common commitment to early childhood success. We know kindergarten readiness is one of the strongest predictors of future academic achievement, and today’s milestone reflects a shared understanding that preparing children for success begins long before they enter a classroom.”
In July 2025, the Newport City Commission became the first river city governing body to adopt a Read Ready resolution, with additional cities and school districts following suit.
