Independence and Taylor Mill have both been ranked among the top 10 safest cities in Kentucky by Safewise, a home security and research firm. Independence ranked as the fifth safest city, and Taylor Mill ranked as the eighth safest city in 2026.

The rankings were created using a combined analysis of FBI statistics and Safewise’s national “State of Safety,” study, which measures perceptions of crime and public safety. 2026 will be the 12th year Safewise has released rankings.

Independence was one of five cities in the commonwealth to experience a decrease in both violent crime and property crime year-over-year, even though Safewise’s analysis suggested overall rates of crime statewide had increased since 2024.

“Despite an increase in crime rates, Kentuckians who took our State of Safety survey report a surge of confidence,” according to Safewise. “About two-thirds (67%) say they feel safe in the state, which is a staggering increase from 39% the last two years in a row. That’s the fourth highest percentage in the nation.”
