Campbell County Superintendent Shelli Wilson announced her decision to retire at the completion of the school year in a letter to school staff and families on April 3.
The announcement comes after Wilson’s 32 years of service in public education, including 25 years in Campbell County Schools.
“This decision has not come easily,” Wilson said in the letter. “I have spent my career alongside extraordinary students, staff and a community that deeply values education. My only hesitation in stepping away is rooted in how much I care for each of you and the work we do together every day. Serving as your superintendent has been one of the greatest honors of my professional life.”

Wilson thanked the Campbell County Board of Education for their trust, partnership and leadership.
She also highlighted some of the district’s successes. In the letter she said that Campbell County Schools are among the top in the state academically and in extracurriculars.
“None of this work would have been possible without you,” Wilson said in the letter. “To our staff, thank you for your dedication and for always placing students at the center of your work. To our families and community, thank you for your trust, your support and your partnership. To our students, thank you for inspiring us daily with your resilience, talent and potential.”
Wilson said her commitment to the students and the district remains strong. She said she will continue to serve with focus, care and determination throughout the transition, working to ensure a smooth and successful path forward.
“Campbell County Schools and the Campbell County Board of Education wish Dr. Shelli Wilson the very best in her coming retirement and celebrate all that has been accomplished during her tenure as superintendent,” the district said on its Facebook page. “CCS respects and supports her decision, considering all she’s contributed in 32 years in public education and 25 years in Campbell County, but she will be deeply missed. We are incredibly grateful for all she has done for our students, staff, and community.”
