Covington will foreclose on five nuisance properties throughout the city as part of the city’s housing initiative, which aims to inventory and develop city-owned and blighted properties throughout Covington for later redevelopment. The move follows a vote from the Board of Commissioners Tuesday night.

The properties all have either been cited for nuisances, have absentee owners, aren’t generating tax revenue or are actually incurring cost, according to the city’s Neighborhood Services Department. The owner of one property on Greenup Street, for instance, “gutted the house last year and put all the debris in the back yard, stacked more than 4’ high,” according to a neighborhood services memo submitted to the Board of Commissioners. “This was removed by the city at a cost of over $9,000.”

Other properties have had issues with squatting, have sat vacant for years or have long-outstanding tax bills.

The properties slated for foreclosure are listed below:

  • 209 Trevor Street
  • 1717 Greenup Street
  • 4218 McKee Street
  • 4711 Victory Avenue
  • 1133 Garrard Street.
