Covington Police are increasing their presence on and around the intersection of 16th Street and Maryland Avenue after two people were charged in a drug investigation on Thursday.

The police are asking for the community’s help in suppressing drug-related activity in the area and are even offering cash rewards for tips that lead to additional arrests.

“This particular intersection has been an issue in the past,” said Covington Police Public Information Officer Justin Bradbury, adding that Thursday’s bust was part of a “broader effort” to address the issues in the area.

Two people were arrested and charged following the execution of a search warrant on Thursday: Clarence Rice and Geraldine Rice.

Clarence Rice was charged with trafficking marijuana, which is a felony since it’s his second offense. He was also charged with trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school, also a felony. Finally, he landed a third charge for sexual abuse in the first degree. The police citation states that “during the investigation, [Clarence Rice] was observed conducting unwanted sexual contact for sexual gratification.” More information about the alleged sex crime was not immediately available.

Geraldine Rice was also charged with trafficking marijuana, trafficking within 1,000 feet of a school and possession of cocaine.

Bradbury said that residents should expect an increased police presence in and around the intersection indefinitely. According to Bradbury, “there’s more going on in that area” than just marijuana.

“Our focus is on improving safety and protecting the many law-abiding residents who call this area home,” the department wrote in a social media post announcing the arrests.

Anyone willing to share information about criminal activity in the area is invited to leave tips with Covington investigators by calling either (859)292-2236 or (859)292-2238. People can also submit an anonymous tip to Cincinnati/NKY Crime Stoppers by calling (513)352-3040. Cash rewards are available for tips that lead to arrests.
